World Hijab Day

We Promoted World Hijab Day at NewCollege, Swindon - 1st February 2014

World Hijab Day was founded by a woman. A woman who when she moved to America was severly bullied at her high school for being the only one who wore a Hijab. Nazma Khan founded World Hijab Day, aiming for people to know what it's like to wear the Hijab, to understand the concept of the Hijab and to gain a better grasp of women in Islam. For one day, women from different beliefs around the world are all invited to wear the Hijab for this cause.

When we found out about this project, we straight away wanted to get involved. We found some volunteers and got cracking on ideas on how to promote World Hijab Day. We arrived to the idea of having a table full of different various types of Hijabs and to ask women whether they would like to try on one of the Hijabs; And thats exactly what we did. We had an amazing variety of different colours and styled Hijabs. We also brought different kinds of pins that hold the Hijab in place. On one side of the table, we placed a chair and mirror which was where our Hijab-styling flourished. On the other side of the table we displayed several different pamphlets on women in Islam and about the Hijab, mini posters of Hijab being established in other religions and printed quotations from many non-muslim and muslim women about their experience of wearing the Hijab.

We had many female pupils and staff members of the college participating and trying on the Hijabs. We even had men commenting on how they feel that World Hijab Day was a great idea and how they felt that it helped to spread awareness of why women wear the Hijab.

The whole day was a hit!
